Uniwax S.A. is a subsidiary of the Dutch Vlisco group, which has operated in the textile industry since 1846. Uniwax designs and produces vibrantly colored fabrics that constitute an essential part of West African and Central African culture. Nearly 50 years ago, Uniwax developed a textile manufacturing procedure known as Wax Côte d’Ivoire, making colorful cotton cloths with batik printing that constitute a form of nonverbal communication among African women and have become collectors’ items. While Uniwax traditionally leads this market segment, it now faces stiff competition from Asian companies.
