2018 3PL Study Recap: 3PL-Shipper Relationships & 3PL IT Capabilities

Introduction

As the speed of supply chain and logistics operations advances to service increasing consumer demand, there is a greater need for real time information visibility and communication between shippers and 3PL providers.  With this said, more shippers and 3PLs report valuing collaboration with other companies including competitors to achieve higher levels of service and reduced logistics cost.

True partnerships between shippers and their 3PLs are producing innovative solutions, reductions in logistics costs and better results for shippers.

More companies are outsourcing IT services to 3PLs as compared to past years, giving 3PLs who adopt cutting edge technologies a competitive edge in a crowded industry.  This year’s 2018 3PL Study indicates that significant demand and interest exists for shippers to rely on 3PLs for the IT technologies necessary to be successful.  Shippers also report greater interest in relying on their 3PL partners for an array of supply chain and logistics services.

The 3PL-Shipper Relationship Has Evolved into Collaborative Partnerships

Today supply chain businesses are stretched to perform effectively under demands for time-sensitive consumer deliveries, shortened product lifecycles, lean inventories in warehouses and distribution centers and the constant pressure to keep costs low.

The increased availability of data has helped to provide critical information for decision making while also establishing higher shipper expectatio

DHL released its latest DHL Trend Report today - 3D Printing and the Future of Supply Chains. DHL has been testing a variety of both 3D printing hardware and techniques for several years and has identified applications that have potential to redefine manufacturing and supply chain strategies. RESEARCH: JDA & WMG, University of Warwick Study Reveals Most European Manufacturers

European manufacturers are failing to effectively use data and analytics when it comes to supply chain planning and segmentation, according to a new report from JDA Software Group, Inc., and WMG, at the University of Warwick. The ‘Supply Chain Segmentation: A Window of Opportunity for European Manufacturing’ report surveyed 100 manufacturing organisations across Europe to benchmark their supply chain segmentation practices. The report revealed that only 18 per cent of respondents considered historic, present and future data in the supply chain planning process, while only 39 per cent of respondents stated that their segmentation models were data-driven. In fact, nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of organisations stated they simply utilise ‘rules of thumb’ over any kind of data-driven methodology.
