Job Description

Reporting to the Supply Chain Manager, this role is with a well-established (80 years old) industrial manufacturer and will be the “go to” person for all things related to procurement within the manufacturing plant. The Purchasing Supervisor sources materials from suppliers at the lowest cost with considerations of quality, reliability of source and urgency of need. Responsibilities include but are not limited to developing and maintaining relationships with vendors, understanding market conditions, negotiating pricing, monitoring inventory levels, and reordering at optimum time and price.  Plans and executes orders, and expedites delivery and shipment as required to support the manufacturing production schedules and plant sales goals.  Source alternate vendors as needed.  Make recommendations regarding cost reduction, forecasting of material prices, optimizing profit margins, and maintaining inventory accuracy.


The Purchasing Supervisor provides leadership and direction to the purchasing team.  This position will require significant interaction with all levels of the organization.  May participate in, or lead cross functional teams representing local and / or global initiatives.



Key areas of responsibilities:


  • Supervise, develop, and continuously improve the purchasing team
  • Prepare purchase orders necessary to meet Just In Time delivery of inventory
  • Coordinate and communicate resolution of shortage issues with shop
  • Use root cause analysis to determine cause of material shortages and issues; develop, recommend and implement actions to resolve
  • Create reports and queries in ERP system to analyze velocity, trends, risks and opportunities
  • Maintain updated and accurate vendor pricing
  • Develop strong vendor partner relationships including site visits and principal review meetings
  • Negotiate price and terms from a position of high information
  • Coordinate quality matters and engineering changes with suppliers as required
  • Work with Product Development, Engineering and Operations regarding material requirements for new and existing products
  • Coordinate delivery of materials to ensure on-time delivery on a level delivery schedule
  • Compiles month-end inventory turns reporting to assist with continuous turn improvement.
  • Establish criteria for the evaluation of existing suppliers and selection of new suppliers.
  • Establish optimal stocking levels and determine appropriate ordering
  • Maintain relationships with current vendors and locate new vendors to help diversify our supplier network.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Department to understand design changes and set quality expectations with vendors.
  • Have knowledge of the supply chain process to negotiate business-to-business transactions that are mutually beneficial.
  • Documentation of procurement processes and implementation process improvement initiatives
  • Maintain an active presence among operational departments promoting communication.
  • Development and updating of procurement metrics that are aligned to the business.
  • Collaborate with peers globally to foster sharing of best practices and continuous improvement.




  • Bachelor's degree (Business, Operations Management, Accounting), or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in logistics, supply planning, procurement
  • APICS certification in Production and Inventory Management preferred
  • Experience in production planning using ERP and MRP systems
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Manufacturing a plus
