Process and Automation Engineer

Position Summary:

The Process and Automation Engineer is a hands-on, on-the-floor position that reports directly to the Plant Manager.  The incumbent will provide automation and controls support for multiple production lines to ensure the efficient production of a quality product. Focus on maintaining reliable and safe manufacturing systems while improving production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs, and changeovers. He/She will also assist in the initial concept, design input, buy-off and installation of equipment for advanced manufacturing, using knowledge of engineering and programming, as well as sophisticated metrology, machine vision, precision motion control and advanced robots.

Essential Functions

  • Perform/supervise the creation, modification, updating and of optimization of PLC programs.
  • Perform/supervise the creation, modification, and updating HMI application.
  • Perform/supervise the installation, replacement, and modification of electrical equipment.
  • Perform/supervise the installation of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform/supervise calibration of plant instrumentation.
  • Provide/supervise troubleshooting of process, control, and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems related to PLCs, HMIs, ethernet communications, sensors, robots, servo drives, and vision systems.
  • Maintain, modify, and update electrical manuals, automation and control documentation, and P&ID drawings.
  • Ensure plant modifications, upgrades, and new installations comply with Federal, State, and Local engineering codes and regulations.
  • Maintain a high level of equipment reliability utilizing maintenance, engineering, and appropriate resources to resolve equipment availability issues.
  • Provide technical resources for incident investigation, root cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Develop and review specifications for equipment, as well as performance requirements.
  • Provide input to system operating manual.
  • Test to make sure that machinery has the capability to carry out desired functions.
  • Set schedule of procedures and maintenance tasks as required to maintain equipment in prescribed condition.
  • Help provide technical information and training to workers in other departments as needed.
  • Participate in the design and development of equipment and systems, and redesign of existing systems to fulfill the needs of customers.
  • Provide equipment functionality and capability reports and act as technical liaison.
  • Identify areas for process improvements through analysis of efficiency data and process review. Includes improving equipment performance, and creating troubleshooting tools.
  • Ensure food safety and quality protocols are followed.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Must be successful at working in a team environment; experience at managing outside contractors, and working with maintenance and production personnel.
  • Knowledge of machine vision systems, electronics, mechanics, pneumatics, and computer programming.
  • Problem solving, system and methods improvement skills.
  • Understanding of C# .Net and / or PLC programming a plus.
  • System integration, test and debug skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.  Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Basic understanding of Solid Works, and use Microsoft software – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Min 5 years of automation and controls experience in a production facility, preferably in a food processing plant.

Secondary Functions

  • Provides night and weekend coverage as needed
  • This job position is subject to on call status with expectations of immediate response
